German as a Foreign Language (DaF)

At the Solling boarding school, children and young people from many nations traditionally live and learn together. Around ten percent of our students currently come from abroad. To ensure that they can develop linguistically, academically and culturally in the best possible way, we offer a comprehensive programme for support, integration and intercultural encounters in our own language school.

Language support in the language school

Our language school for German as a foreign language (DaF) is equipped with modern equipment – with digital learning media, a wide range of teaching materials and a team of experienced, qualified GFL teachers.

Lessons are based on the age, language level and individual learning needs of the students.

By means of a language assessment test organised by the Land of Lower Saxony in their mother tongue, international youngpeople can have their language of origin recognised as a second foreign language.

This creates additional lessons that are used specifically for German language development at all skill levels .

Language support in grades 5-11

After an internal language level assessment, our students are taught in courses from level B1 to C2 . The lessons cover all areas of competence – reading, writing, Listen and Speaking – and specifically promotes the use of the German language in everyday school life.

At the end of each school year, students can take an official language exam in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Göttingen.

The Goethe Certificates, internationally recognised, document individual learning progress and represent a valuable additional qualification.

Individual support

The focus is on individual learning development.

Each international student works on the basis of a personal language profile, which is regularly reviewed and adapted. This results in concrete learning goals and priorities.

In addition to the lessons, the young people receive tailor-made additional tasks that support their individual progress .and promote independent learning.

English/French and Spanish.

Language certificates for guest students

For guest students, we offer an intensive, year-round language course, which – depending on previous knowledge – prepares students for the Goethe Certificate B2 or C1.

The exams are taken at the end of the school year by examiners from the Goethe-Institut Göttingen .

Extracurricular activities

Our international students actively shape life at the boarding school. Cultural exchange and joint learning are firmly anchored in everyday life.Regular offers include:

  • Representation of international students in the student parliament
  • Festivals and evening speeches on culturally significant occasions
  • Translation workshops for young people interested in languages
  • International cinema followed by a discussion

In this way, language comes alive – in the classroom, in exchange and in the community.

Conclusion

The language school of the Solling boarding school combines language support, cultural openness and personal support.

It is a place where international students not only learn German, but also experience themselves as part of a diverse community – linguistically confident, culturally enriched and humanly connected.
